The Four Types of Ductwork and Pros & Cons of Each

Protek HVAC Team·May 14, 2026·5 min read

Understanding your home's ductwork is key to maintaining efficient heating and cooling in Tampa's climate. Here's what you need to know about the four main types.

Sheet Metal Ducts

The most common type — aluminum or galvanized steel. Extremely durable, smooth surface for easy airflow, non-porous so resistant to mold, and easiest to clean. Higher upfront cost but typically the best long-term option.

Flexible (Flex) Ducts

Made from coiled wire coated in flexible plastic. Cheapest and easiest to install but prone to sagging and kinking which restricts airflow. Best used for short connections, exhaust vents, and attic fans — not as primary ductwork.

Fiberboard Ducts

Easy to cut and fabricate for tight spaces but the rough interior surface traps dust and debris. Much harder to clean and prone to mold in humid climates like Tampa's. Generally not recommended for Florida homes.

Fiberglass Ductboard

Sheet metal ducts with a fiberglass lining for extra insulation and noise reduction. Good thermal performance but fiberglass fibers can deteriorate over time and must be replaced if cracked.

Which Ductwork Is Best for Tampa Homes?

In Florida's heat and humidity, flex duct is the top choice — it resists mold, cleans easily, and lasts the longest. Fiberboard is the worst option for Tampa due to the moisture issue.
